Historically, Las Vegas has been known as the Boxing capital of the world.  In fact, Nevada was the first state to legalize prize fighting in the entire USA way back in 1897 when the Prizefighting Act was signed into Law on January 29th, 1897.  Prior to that, professional fighting was not legal anywhere in the United States.

As boxing became the most popular martial art and combat sport in Las Vegas, the need for further regulation was recognized. This resulted in the formation of the Nevada Athletic Commission. The Nevada Athletic Commission regulates ALL unarmed fighting and martial arts in the entire state of Nevada. This includes traditional boxing and Pugilism, Muay Thai  kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts and MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) with the Gi or Kimono, No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and submission Grappling.

When Mixed Martial Arts and UFC started gaining popularity in the early 1990s it was largely due to the incredible Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Victories achieved by the Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Family.  Royce Gracie, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt shocked the world with his amazing BJJ submissions and chokes and arm locks. Royce Gracie was able to use his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling martial arts submissions to tap out opponents much larger than him.
